Khansa Plastic Surgery
Surgery for Hemangiomas in Austin, TX
Reasons for surgery
When is surgery required for hemangiomas?
Most hemangiomas do not require treatment, as they do not cause any problems.
In infants, Dr. Khansa's preferred treatment is propranolol/Hemangeol, as this medication is very effective for the treatment of proliferating infantile hemangiomas.
However, there are some situations where hemangioma removal is necessary:
An older child in whom the hemangioma has not involuted enough, and is still causing cosmetic distortion or functional problems
An infant in whom the hemangioma is causing functional problems despite treatment with propranolol/Hemangeol. For example, a hemangioma that causing visual obstruction and not shrinking fast enough with propranolol/Hemangeol.
Surgery
How is hemangioma removal performed?
Dr. Khansa performs hemangioma excision at an accredited children's hospital in Austin. The surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means your child can go home the same day. Depending on the size and complexity of the hemangioma, the surgery can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
During the surgery, Dr. Khansa performs very precise markings to excise the hemangioma with minimal distortion of the surrounding tissues. He then performed meticulous skin closure to minimize visible scarring.
Recovery
What is recovery like after hemangioma removal?
Patients usually go home the same day as surgery. Recovery is typically easy. Discomfort is minimal, and can be effectively treated with over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol). Depending on the location of the hemangioma excision, the dressing may consist of surgical tape or antibiotic ointment.
Recurrence
Can a hemangioma come back after removal?
It is very rare that a hemangioma comes back after excision. Most hemangiomas that are excised during the involution phase do not have a risk of recurring or coming back.
Sometimes, if a hemangioma is removed during the proliferation phase, it may have a risk of growing back. In those situations, Dr. Khansa would design a treatment plan that includes a combination of surgery and propranolol/Hemangeol, to remove the hemangioma, while minimizing the risk of it coming back.
